The cause of death of former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has been revealed.

Hatton died by suicide after being found by his manager, Paul Speak, inside his home in England on September 14, it was detailed by the Stockport Coroner’s Court on Thursday, October 16. He was 46 years old.

Hatton was seen two days before his death and appeared “well,” the court said on Thursday.

When Hatton failed to attend a scheduled event on September 13, however, Speak arrived at his home the following morning to make the discovery.

A full inquest hearing surrounding Hatton’s death will take place on March 20, 2026, when witnesses will be heard and other evidence will be considered. The police have said there are no suspicious circumstances.

Hatton’s funeral took place on Friday, October 10, when thousands lined the streets of Manchester, England, to remember the boxer known as “The Hitman.”

The ceremony was attended by a host of celebrities and athletes, including Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, English soccer hero Wayne Rooney and boxers Tyson Fury, Tony Bellew, Frank Bruno and Amir Khan.

“I’ve watched thousands of fighters train over the years, hundreds of thousands,” Bellew, 42, said at the funeral, per Sky News. “And after watching him … I was in awe of him. He was the standard, everything he did. He worked tremendously hard and was one of the best people I ever got to meet.”

He added, “There are thousands that have turned out today, not hundreds. That speaks volumes.”

Hatton became one of the most popular boxers in British history, winning the IBF light welterweight world title when he beat Kosta Tszyu in 2005.

He would later fight legendary boxers Floyd Mayweather in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2009, both TKO losses.

“I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Ricky Hatton,” Pacquiao, 46, wrote via Instagram after Hatton’s death. “He was not only a great fighter inside the ring but also a brave and kind man in life.  We shared unforgettable moments in boxing history and I will always honor the respect and sportsmanship he showed. Ricky fought bravely, not just in the ring, but in his journey through life. He truly had a good fight, and we are all blessed to have been part of his wonderful journey.”

Pacquiao added, “My prayers and deepest condolences go out to the Hatton family and all his loved ones. May the Lord give you strength and comfort in this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

Hall of Fame boxing promoter Frank Warren remembered Hatton on social media after his death, calling him “a superbly talented fighter who inspired a generation of young boxers and fans in a way very few had done before due to both his personality and the entertainment he provided in the ring.”

“From making his debut [in] Widnes in 1997 to then go on to win one of the most historic fights in British boxing history against Kostya Tszyu in Manchester,” Warren added via X, “Ricky will rightly go down as one of the modern greats of this sport.”
