Nationwide protests against the administration of President Donald Trump planned for Saturday will include 37 events across Maine.
Saturday’s protests will be part of the second nationwide event organized under the banner of “No Kings,” a reference to the authoritarian policies and actions of the Trump administration, and the president’s open autocratic ambitions.
The first “No Kings” protest was held on Trump’s birthday when a military parade in honor of the Army’s 250th birthday was staged at the president’s behest in Washington, in what the organization called his “attempt to turn June 14 into a coronation.”
More than 1,000 people rallied in Bangor and thousands attended protests across the state.
After those protests, No Kings says Trump “doubled down,” sending “masked agents into our streets, terrorizing our communities,” detaining people without warrants, “threatening to overtake elections,” and more.
Protests on Saturday will be held in Bangor, Belfast, Cherryfield, Calais, Castine, Dexter, Ellsworth, Machias, Houlton, Lubec, Penobscot, Presque Isle, Rockland, Southwest Harbor and Vinalhaven, along with more locations in central and southern Maine.
No Kings is a coalition of more than 150 organizations, ranging from political advocacy groups to labor unions and human rights and environmental groups.
