A Fort Fairfield home was heavily damaged Sunday in a fire but was saved from total ruin thanks to the homeowner’s quick call, fire officials said.

The owner, whose name was not immediately available, had left the two-story house on Center Limestone Road earlier Sunday but when he got back he saw smoke coming from the house and promptly called Fort Fairfield Fire Rescue, Assistant Chief Danny Gahagan said.

The fire caught quickly and is believed to have started from an outside electrical outlet, he said. No injuries were reported.

Crews arrived about 11:45 a.m. to see heavy fire outside and starting to spread into the building, along with a fallen power line, the department said on social media. The Easton and Limestone fire departments provided assistance.

Firefighters first doused the flames outside to slow the fire’s progress, then put out the fire inside, officials said.

Utility workers were on scene to deal with the downed power line.

After the firefighters deemed the home safe to enter, they allowed the homeowner back in, Gahagan said. One bedroom was saved from most of the fire’s effects because its door was closed.

“Keep your bedroom doors shut at night, because it’s proven time and time again that it can hold off fire,” he said. “It gives you more chance of survival and escape.”

The home was insured.
