Mitt Romney’s sister-in-law, Carrie Elizabeth Romney, was found dead in a Los Angeles-area parking lot on Friday, October 10.

“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives. We ask for privacy during this difficult time,” a representative for Mitt, the former United States senator, told People in a Monday, October 13, statement.

Carrie died at the age of 64. According to People, Los Angeles County law enforcement responded around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, arriving to a parking garage in Valencia, a community on the outskirts of L.A.

A representative for the L.A. County Sheriff confirmed to the outlet that a woman jumped or fell from a parking structure, which is reportedly five stories tall and near a Hyatt hotel. The county medical examiner’s office listed Carrie’s place of death as “street” on its website. As of Monday, it stated that her cause of death was “deferred” pending further investigation. Her body status was “ready for release.”

Mitt, 78, served as Massachusetts governor from 2003 to 2007, and ran for President on the Republican ticket in 2008, dropping out of the race and backing John McCain. He launched another bid for the Oval Office in 2012, ultimately losing to former President Barack Obama. He later joined the Senate, representing Utah from 2019 through early 2025. Mitt announced in 2023 that he planned to retire from public service at the end of his term.

Per the Los Angeles Times, Carrie — who lived in the L.A.-adjacent community of Valencia — is apparently the wife of Mitt’s older brother, G. Scott Romney, a lawyer.
