The decrepit Bangor Mall sign is gone.

The sign with broken electronics and missing letters had stood tall on the corner of Hogan Road and Bangor Mall Boulevard until Monday, when mall owner Namdar Realty Group demolished the sign after being sued by the city of Bangor.

Only the posts that once held the sign were still standing as of Monday afternoon.

Removing the sign is one of the most visible indications yet that Namdar is working to address its numerous city code violations. The company has paved some of the potholes and portions of road, repaired a stormwater line that led to a broken sewer line, and repaired the mall’s roof following two lawsuits from the city of Bangor.

The dilapidated sign was originally supposed to be repaired, Namdar’s senior legal advisor, Daniel Giannini, said in January. Instead, he said in court in September that there was a months-long saga to figure out who owned the land around the sign and pull the required permits.

Namdar then decided to demolish the sign, he said.

A final hearing was held in part on Sept. 22, but witnesses for Namdar testified for more than eight hours, leaving no time for city witnesses. The city said it has no more evidence to present, according to court filings.

The judge will issue final decisions after Oct. 24, according to court records.
