On Friday, Oct. 3, The Bangor Art Society (BAS) in partnership with The Zillman Art Museum at 40 Harlow Street in Bangor celebrated its 150th anniversary. Local artists and 100 community members enjoyed an evening of food, music, dancing, magic, and camaraderie.
Funding was provided by a generous grant from the Penobscot County Commission and Camden National Bank, (also celebrating its 150th anniversary.) Other gifts and services that added to the event came from 11 Central restaurant, which hosted the People’s Choice competition that selected three artists currently on display at the Zillman Museum. Thanks also go to The Penobscot Theatre Company, Fine Prints, and the Rock and Art Shop for their support. The dedicated BAS committee and board members made the museum garden into a spectacular place to celebrate. BAS is a nonprofit whose proceeds covered the cost of the event and a generous donation to The Zillman Art Museum.
BAS is the longest running organization of its kind in the country. The founding members, Jeremiah Pearson Hardy and his daughter Anne Hardy, began a tradition in 1875 of arts and culture in Bangor and the surrounding areas. They likely couldn’t have imagined that 150 years later, we’d still be going strong.
