I always assumed that I had to present my ID when voting. When I volunteered to collect signatures last year to put the voter ID referendum on the ballot I wasn’t really surprised that many other citizens also thought that the ID was the law.
As I collected signatures in the small town of Lee, I did find an alarming number of folks who did not think it was necessary to have a government issued ID to vote. Some said that they knew everyone in town, so it wasn’t necessary. That may have been true once, but it’s doubtful that it still is.
I also had the privilege to collect signatures on election day 2024 in Orono. I was impressed with the well-informed students who wanted to sign the petition. They were concerned that they were not asked for their ID to prove who they were before voting.
Then there are some who have the legal right, an obligation to vote, who never bother to. That’s a travesty. Having been blessed being an American or having pursued legal citizenship requires your participation in making and keeping this country on the right path. Please be sure to vote this November.
