Last week, President Donald Trump declared that American cities should be “training grounds” for our military. I find his stark vision of armed forces occupying our cities inspiring, but not in the way that Trump intended. I’m motivated to protect my right to vote by voting “no” on Question 1.
Studies show that voter fraud isn’t a meaningful problem in Maine. Despite these facts, Question 1 seeks to slash absentee voting by two days, make it harder to obtain and return absentee ballots, remove ongoing absentee voter status for Maine seniors and people with disabilities, limit the number of convenient drop boxes, and require some forms of ID before voting.
If there isn’t a problem with voter fraud, why create road blocks for Mainers to vote? It’s my personal view that Question 1 isn’t about shoring up Maine’s already secure and accurate elections.
Respectfully, I take no pleasure in my strong belief that Question 1 belongs to the shameful history of voter suppression. Please vote “No” on Question 1.
