Despite ongoing drought conditions, peak fall foliage is visible throughout northern and western Maine.
According to this week’s fall foliage report, peak foliage has set in throughout the Allagash, the North Maine Woods and a majority of northern Aroostook County. Foliage in these areas, and throughout parts of western Maine, is still developing and continuous color development is expected.
“While we are seeing peak conditions in northern Maine and high color in portions of the western mountains, colors are still emerging daily in central and coastal regions,” said Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry foliage spokesperson Gale Ross.
“This week’s seasonal days and cooler nights are helping bring out the best of Maine’s autumn palette. The canopies in western Maine are showing off their most vibrant colors, which makes for perfect timing for our leaf enthusiasts.”
The central Maine highlands, western Maine and the very coastal regions in Down East Maine are seeing around 70% of their trees reaching full fall color. Interior Washington County and midcoast Maine can still expect to see color development over the next week and a half.
Seasonal temperatures – with some warmer days this weekend – will keep Maine’s beautiful foliage sticking around for a while longer, and cool nights will help colors continue to develop.
