Keith Urban subtly addressed his split from Nicole Kidman before their divorce news went public.
Resurfaced video footage from one of Urban’s recent concerts showed the singer changing the lyrics in his song “The Fighter,” which features Carrie Underwood.
“When they’re tryna get to you, baby, I’ll be the fighter,” Urban, 57, usually sings. However, he instead offered a shout-out to his guitarist and rising country music star Maggie Baugh, according to a video shared via Instagram on Saturday, September 27.
“When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie, I’ll be your guitar player,” Urban could be heard singing in the clip.
Baugh, 25, uploaded the video to social media with a series of emojis sharing her shock over his kind words.
“Did he just say that,” she captioned the clip.
Some fans have since started to speculate that the lyric change was a subtle reference to Urban and Kidman’s split. (Urban has not publicly addressed the song switchup.)
Us Weekly confirmed on Monday, September 29, that Urban and Kidman, 58, had separated after 19 years of marriage. The following day, Us confirmed that Kidman had officially filed for divorce. She cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split.
Urban and Kidman, who got married in 2006, share daughters Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14. Court documents reveal that Kidman asked to be the “primary residential parent” of their kids. (Kidman is also the mother of Connor Cruise, 30, and Isabelle Cruise, 32, whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise.)
Along with the divorce filing, Kidman submitted a marital dissolution agreement, which both she and Urban had signed. The agreement included a parenting plan, a child support plan and a “parenting seminar order.” While the agreement was signed by Kidman on September 6 and Urban on August 29, their date of separation was listed as September 30, the same day of Kidman’s divorce filing.
All the Clues Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban Were Heading Toward a Split
News of Kidman and Urban’s divorce comes months after the couple celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary in June.
“Happy Anniversary Baby,” Kidman shared via Instagram at the time, posting a photo of her and Urban.
The following month, Urban avoided discussing his wife in an interview with Ryan Seacrest.
“Do people tell you your wife is in everything?” Seacrest, 50, asked during his July 23 On Air With Ryan Seacrest radio show broadcast. “Nicole Kidman is in everything.”
Urban laughed out loud before answering the question with a pretty vague response.
“Yeah, she’s almost as busy as you but not quite, very close though,” Urban replied.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban: A Timeline of Their Relationship
“First of all, she makes the greatest choices. I was watching one of her series last night … she can get evil, diabolical,” Seacrest continued, referring to season 2 of Kidman’s Hulu show Nine Perfect Strangers. “Is that something with your life, her life, and mapping it all out … that’s a job isn’t it?”
Urban responded with a noncommittal, “It’s a job, yeah.”
This was the last time Urban mentioned Kidman in an interview before their split news broke. The former couple stepped out for their last appearance together in Nashville on June 20 at a FIFA World Cup 2025 game.
