This Renaissance Revival-style mansion in Islesboro listed for $6.5 million had its price cut by a third after failing to sell two years ago.
The waterfront home boasts more than 9,000 square feet of living space, including eight bedrooms, 11 bathrooms and seven fireplaces. It has stuccoed exterior walls, arched windows and doors and covered patios.
It now features a smaller price tag, as the sellers first listed the estate in 2023 for almost $9.8 million. It was the most expensive property listed in Maine that year.
The estate was designed by Philadelphia architect Wilson Eyre and built in 1918 by Louise Grace, one of 12 children of William Russell Grace, a shipping mogul and founder of W.R. Grace.
Situated on nearly 9 acres at the end of a private peninsula on Hermit’s Point Road, the property also has 3,570 feet of shoreline and a dock. The mansion’s other amenities include an outdoor pool and boathouse.
While the design and size of the mansion is grand, the most striking feature of the property is the sweeping water views visible from nearly every window, said John Oldham of Island Property, the listing agent for the home.
“It was designed specifically for that spot,” Oldham said. “It has this view to the southwest that’s expansive and wonderful.”
Islesboro is roughly 3 miles off the coast of midcoast Maine and isn’t accessible by car, but can be reached by a public ferry that transports vehicles.
The sellers have owned the property since 1988 and used it as a seasonal getaway, Oldham said, but the estate could be a year-round home. After nearly 40 years of ownership, Oldham said the owners are selling the estate because, “circumstances changed and they’re just not using it like they used to.”
The home was taken off the market and listed again with Oldham’s company in November 2024 with a $3 million price cut. While the estate has seen plenty of interest, Oldham said the right buyer hasn’t come along yet.
Oldham said the estate would make a perfect home for a large family.
