A month after the Bangor fire chief abruptly resigned the city has not yet started a formal search for a replacement.

Fire Chief Geoffrey Low resigned June 5 in the middle of a three-year contract. Eric Pelletier, who has served eight years as deputy chief, was appointed interim fire chief the same day.

In the month since, the city has not started a formal search for a new chief, spokesperson David Warren said. The city has not posted the job on its website.

When asked if the city will conduct a formal search, Warren said “There may very well be, but the focus right now is considering next steps when it comes to leading the fire department.”

He did not respond to a follow up question about what he meant by “next steps.”

Low was hired in December 2024, after a “comprehensive search,” by the city. He replaced   Thomas Higgins, who retired in September 2024, after 34 years in the department.
