Park Ranger Discovers Giant Salamander — and It’s a ‘Living Fossil’

Move over, Jurassic Park — nature just delivered a real-life blast from the past. A park ranger working in California’s remote forests stumbled upon an enormous California giant salamander while monitoring streams in his territory in September 2025.

The massive creature — with its long, thick body, rough skin and wide, flat head — looked almost prehistoric as it rested near the water’s edge. And as it turns out, that description is spot-on.

These creatures are rarely seen in the wild and are often called “living fossils” because their species has remained virtually unchanged for millions of years. Fossil records show their ancestors lived alongside dinosaurs, making this discovery a direct link to a prehistoric world.

A California Giant Salamander Was Discovered in a Remote Forest

While snorkeling in Olema Creek, Michael Reichmuth, a ranger and biologist, stumbled upon an extraordinary sight: freshly hatched California giant salamanders. Not only did he see them, but he photographed them — the first time these larvae have ever been documented in the wild, per National Park Service. The tiny creatures, still attached to their yolk sacs, give researchers rare insight into a little-known stage of life for this near-threatened species.

2 Creatures Thought Extinct for 7,000 Years Rediscovered

The giant salamander that Reichmuth found was seriously impressive, measuring more than two feet long and weighing several pounds. But that’s actually on the smaller side for this species — giant salamanders can grow to over five feet, making them the largest amphibians alive today.

What Makes California Giant Salamanders Nature’s Most Fascinating Creatures

Giant salamanders are amphibians, a class of animals that can live both in water and on land. Like frogs, giant salamanders begin life in water as larvae and undergo metamorphosis to become adults. Some salamander species possess incredible regenerative abilities, capable of regrowing lost limbs, tails and even parts of their heart or spinal cord. Scientists study these traits in hopes of finding medical applications for humans.

These ancient animals are also masters of hiding. Giant salamanders spend much of their time concealed beneath rocks, submerged in streams or tucked under logs. Most are nocturnal, venturing out at night to hunt for fish, insects and other small prey. Their eyesight is weak, so they rely on detecting vibrations in the water to navigate and find food. They breathe through their skin and depend on cold, clean, fast-flowing water — meaning even slight pollution or habitat changes can threaten their survival.

Why Wild Giant Salamander Sightings Are Becoming Increasingly Rare

The threats facing giant salamanders are serious and growing. Habitat destruction, water pollution and human encroachment have caused populations to decline dramatically across their range. In some regions, giant salamanders are hunted for food, which has further pushed the species toward endangerment. Because of these compounding pressures, sightings in the wild are increasingly uncommon — making every confirmed encounter all the more valuable to researchers.

Recognizing the significance of his find, the park ranger handled the giant salamander with care. He temporarily brought it in for examination, allowing scientists to measure and document the animal before returning it to its natural habitat. Observations of giant salamander behavior, size and habitat are rare, and each sighting provides data that helps shape conservation strategies for the species.

Why This California Giant Salamander Discovery Matters for Conservation

The park ranger’s decision to release the giant salamander back into the wild demonstrated a core principle of conservation: observing and learning from wildlife without causing harm. Actions like these help ensure that species like the giant salamander can continue to persist despite the growing pressures they face in the modern world.

Even in the 21st century, humans are still coming face to face with ancient creatures that have survived since the age of dinosaurs. These encounters remind us of the fragility and wonder of the natural world and inspire curiosity, respect and a deeper commitment to protecting the extraordinary variety of life on our planet.
