WATERVILLE — Thomas College announces a $1.2 million gift from the estate of Susan C. Jacques ‘47 to establish the Susan C. Jacques Scholarship Fund.
“We are immensely grateful to Susan, whose generosity and transformational gift will support deserving students for years to come,” said Thomas College President Jeannine Diddle Uzzi. “I can’t think of a better legacy than making higher education attainable for more students.”
Jacques graduated from Thomas College in 1947 with a 2-year diploma in secretarial studies and worked in the purchasing department of Central Maine Power after graduating; one of the first women to serve in this capacity. She died on Dec. 7, 2024, in Pompano Beach, Florida, at 97.
Laurah Brown, a 1993 graduate of Thomas College and Jacques’s cousin, visited Thomas College to present the check and share stories about Jacques.
“She wanted to give other people the opportunity to succeed, to become self-reliant. And Susan always thought that education brought a certain pride to one’s life,” said Brown.
“At Thomas College, we prepare students to maximize their potential across the course of their lifetimes. A planned gift to Thomas, however, is not only an investment in the future of aspiring students; it is also an investment in the economy of Maine and our region. At Thomas, we are serious about ensuring our graduates are equipped to become leaders in their communities and to drive the future of Maine’s economy,” said Uzzi.
