Best Medicine concluded season 1 on some surprising cliffhangers — but what does that ending mean for the show’s future?

During the Tuesday, April 7, episode of the hit Fox series, Martin (Josh Charles) was able to stop their Norwegian sister city from scamming Port Wenn. As a result, Martin’s childhood bully exposed his blood phobia by reporting that Elaine (Cree) has been drawing blood without a license.

Martin’s day only got worse when he heard Mark (Josh Segarra) offering to platonically have a baby with their mutual love interest Louisa (Abigail Spencer). The school teacher didn’t shut it down, which pushed Martin to reunite with his ex-girlfriend Eden (Eliza Coupe).

“[The parenthood offer] is a really generous offer. What I notice when you get into your late 30s is you start to realize things aren’t black and white. They aren’t binary. So I think that to consider something that is so beautifully generous and is worth considering all possibilities,” Spencer, 44, exclusively told Us Weekly about the “nice” cliffhanger to end season 1. “Going into season 2, it is like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ Everyone’s got to get their act together. So all possibilities are on the table.”

Best Love Triangles in TV and Movie History Over the Years

Spencer is “excited to see what happens next” for Louisa on her motherhood journey. She also didn’t rule out a possible reconciliation between Louisa and Mark, who broke up before the events of the season 1 premiere.

“Maybe she will rethink things. That’s what I like about a show like this is that it introduces these ideas. It’s been really beautiful to see how the characters and the story lines and the relationships are playing out as the season goes on,” she noted. “Love can take on many, many forms. If Dr. Best all of a sudden isn’t available, who knows what’s going to happen.”

She continued: “But it’s been really nice to watch [the responses]. We’re learning a lot about everyone and what the tone of the show really is and finding our sweet spot.”

As for Louisa’s romance with Martin, Spencer remained tight-lipped about their future.

TV Couples We Need Together in 2026: From ‘The Pitt’ to ‘Tracker’

“It’s interesting to see people in longing. That’s the crux of a romantic comedy. I like that Louisa gets to feel that,” she noted. “It’s longing and people not getting their acts together and how do they get it together? And what if they don’t get it together? Being able to overcome that little thing inside them on their journey [is so interesting]. So I feel like as long as we can stretch it out, that’s good TV.”

Spencer praised Charles, 54, as her scene partner, adding, “We’re just mindful of how we can find interesting ways to get together? How could we do something that feels just really authentic and interesting and honest? It’s very instinctual. He and I don’t really talk a lot outside of the scene because it’s so instinctual between us and he’s such a fabulous scene partner.”

Looking ahead, Spencer is excited for how Best Medicine viewers will be surprised by what might — and what might not — happen next.

“There’s still wonder about how maybe we could take it in a different direction,” she teased. “We will see where they take it. I like to be surprised.”

Best Medicine is currently streaming on Hulu.
