Best Medicine is about to wrap up its first season — but Abigail Spencer already has hopes for season 2.
“[Executive producer] Liz Tuccillo is so generous and collaborative that she has asked me if I have ideas for [my character] Louisa. I’ll pitch things but it is the writers’ journey,” Spencer, 44, exclusively told Us Weekly. “It’s Liz’s show. So to see where they take it, I like to be surprised.”
Spencer shared some out-of-the-box ideas she had for Louisa. Amid the school teacher’s journey to have a baby, Spencer suggested an arc where Louisa “has to take on all these different jobs” at Port Wenn.
“I don’t know why I think this would be so funny but I feel like however Louisa is going to choose to explore this pregnancy, it is expensive,” she teased. “But I thought it’d be really funny if maybe she becomes the town’s jazzercise instructor at the community center. Or maybe the walking club.”

She continued: “I also think it’d be interesting if Louisa gets really obsessed with having to take care of her body and what are all these different ways that she’s going to go about it would be funny.”
Speaking of medical aspects of the show, Spencer weighed in on how Louisa would contribute to Martin’s (Josh Charles) caseload in season 2.
“I don’t want it. The hemochromatosis is enough,” she quipped about Mark’s (Josh Segarra) various medical anomalies. “But I do like that her journey of getting pregnant does keep it in the medical world. If she’s going to have to go through something that is so medically focused, it’ll make sense where it can be very intimate where it pulls Louisa and Martin back together.”
Best Medicine also leaves the door open for a multitude of potential guest appearances — and Spencer has ideas.

“Everyone I’ve ever worked with [should join]. I saw Sarah Rafferty the other day and I was like, ‘Oh, I really want Sarah to come on the show.’ Also Rick Hoffman and Gina Torres and Gabriel Macht. Any of my Suits cast like Patrick J. Adams. I don’t know if we’re going to get Meghan Markle but Meghan would be amazing,” she gushed to Us. “I love all of my Suits cast. I did Children’s Hospital so Lake Bell and Ken Marino.”
Spencer pointed out that costar Annie Potts should invite Laurie Metcalf, Jean Smart and more to come join them. She also named her Burning Love costars and friends such as Michaela Watkins, Nina Dobrev, Michael Chernus, Busy Philipps and Jen Tullock.
“They’ve been really generous with our ideas on the show,” Spencer concluded. “And I think the season 1 finale really tees up really nicely for season 2 to see what happens next on the show.”
Best Medicine airs Tuesdays on Fox at 8 p.m. ET.
