Capt. Renee Curry is getting a major demotion on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit after going against Chief Kathryn Tynan.

Us Weekly’s exclusive clip from the Thursday, April 2, episode of SVU shows Sgt. Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) watching Curry (Aimé Donna Kelly) in her new gig as an executive officer at the precinct.

“Not one officer checking their phone, they must like you,” Rollins quips to Curry, who just dismissed a class of newer police officers.

Curry, as she does, alludes to doing things her own way.

“There may or may not be a rumor going around that anyone not paying attention to the rule gets zero OT,” Curry responds. Rollins says, “You’re laying down the hammer.”

Curry says she’s “a natural” teacher before the two start discussing the squad’s current situation.

“I don’t like this,” Rollins says. Curry replies, “There’s nothing to like. It is what it is.”

Rollins asks, “Can I still be mad for you?”

SVU’s Aimé Donna Kelly Shares Advice She’s Gotten From Mariska Hargitay

Curry changes the subject, revealing she needed to leave for a “budgeting meeting” before sending a message to Detective Jake Griffin (Corey Cott) about double parking.

Thursday’s episode, titled “Vivid,” is a follow-up to the March 12 installment in which Chief Kathryn Tynan (Noma Dumezweni) approached Curry with an offer to become SVU’s deputy chief. Curry turned her down and subsequently told Capt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay).

Curry told her boss that she was “not about to be played” by Tynan, who has been Benson’s main antagonist this season. Curry then revealed news of her reassignment.

“She’s doing this to get to me,” Benson said. “I’m not letting that happen.”

Ahead of SVU’s 27th season premiere in September 2025, Kelly teased a major shift with her character this season as Benson goes head-to-head with Tynan. (Kelly was upped to a series regular ahead of season 27.)

“If your leader is going through some stuff, then the rest of us definitely are,” the actress said at the time. “We all feel a little bit of that tension, and I can’t give too much away, but it heats up.”

Kelly also told Us that she’s excited that fans are invested in how Curry has evolved onscreen. (Curry was introduced as an Internal Affairs Bureau officer during season 22. She transferred to SVU during season 25.)

“What’s beautiful about how Curry’s journey has come to be over the past couple of seasons is she’s also learning from them. I think the rest of the squad sees that,” she told Us. “She’s understanding that there is a different way to police. You can lead with empathy. You can lead with hearing the other person’s side of the story first, instead of always coming with the facts.”

New episodes of Law and Order: SVU premiere on NBC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET and are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
