More than 40 years after the infamous Texas Killing Fields murders took place, a man has been arrested in connection to the deaths of victims Laura Miller and Audrey Cook.

James Elmore was booked on Tuesday, March 31, into the Galveston County Jail on charges of manslaughter and evidence tampering related to the deaths of Miller and Cook, according to KPRC.

Miller and Cook were found dead in an abandoned oil field in League City, Texas, which are known as the Texas Killing Fields.

Elmore, 61, has been accused of helping Clyde Edwin Hedrick hide Miller and Cook’s remains, according to KPRC. Hedrick has been a longtime suspect in the murder cases, though he maintained his innocence over the years. He died at the age of 72 on March 21 as prosecutors were preparing to press murder charges against him in connection to the killings.

Between 1984 and 1991, the bodies of victims Miller, Cook, Heide Villareal Fye and Donna Prudhomme were found in the fields located at an isolated stretch near Calder Road and Ervin Street.

In light of the latest arrest, Miller’s father, Tim Miller, told KPRC that Elmore reached out four years ago and they met several times. During their meetings, Elmore allegedly shared details about the case that Miller said were never made public.

Meanwhile, Chief Assistant District Attorney Kate Willis corroborated that Elmore reached out to Tim in April 2022 to “get some things off his chest.”

He allegedly provided detailed information regarding the deaths of victims Miller, Cook, Fye and Prudhomme, according to Galveston County’s The Daily News.

Elmore’s statements allegedly linked all four killings to Hedrick, which prompted investigators to interview witnesses and victims’ relatives again amid the investigation.

The new arrest took place as part of the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office and a multi-agency task force’s push to reexamine evidence tied to the murders.

During the new look into the case, authorities confirmed they planned to present evidence to a grand jury in order to seek indictments against Hedrick for all four murders. However, he died before he was ever charged.

Prosecutors decided to move forward with presenting evidence tied to Hedrick in order to maintain transparency about the case, as well as to provide closure to the victims’ families.

The same grand jury ultimately returned indictments against Elmore for his alleged involvement in Miller and Cook’s murders. It is not currently clear if he has entered a plea or retained legal counsel following his arrest.

Hedrick was first named a suspect in the case after he was convicted of abuse of a corpse in the death of Ellen Rae Beason in 1986 after her body was found in the same region. The case was upgraded years later, and Henrick was convicted of manslaughter in 2014. He was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison and was ultimately granted parole after eight years behind bars.

The Texas Killing Fields murder have garnered national attention and were even examined in Netflix’s 2022 docuseries Crime Scene: The Texas Killing Fields.
