A man has been charged after a car hit pedestrians in Derby city centre on Saturday evening.

Seven people were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after they were hit by a black Suzuki Swift outside a pub in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm on Saturday.

Sandhu Ponnachan, 36, of Alvaston, has been charged with six counts of GBH with intent, one count of attempted GBH with intent, one count of dangerous driving, and one count of possession of a bladed article.

He lives in the city and has been in the UK for several years, but is originally from India.

Ponnachan has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Four of the seven people taken to hospital have since been discharged, police said.
