Sen. Susan Collins has stated her support for the SAVE America Act. For approximately 9% of the voting population, the requirements would create a hardship to register to vote.

The act also requires states to share voter information with the federal government. There are many ways this information could be misused and there are no guarantees that it won’t be.

There is virtually no voter fraud in the United States. This is a bill looking for a problem, not responding to one.

If Collins votes for it, she is voting against the wishes of her constituents. Less than a year ago, Maine voters soundly rejected requiring voter ID to vote by a vote of 35.8% “yes”’ to 64.2% “no.”

Also, this act would make it more difficult for many voters to use mail-in voting. Sixty-one percent of Mainers over 65 who voted in 2024 did so by mail. Overall, 43% of Mainers voted by mail in 2024. Does Collins want to make it more difficult for them to vote?

If she does vote for this act, she is voting against what is currently working. Maine has one of the highest voter turnouts in the nation. Maine did have the highest voter turnout in the country in 2022 when 60.8% of citizens in Maine’s voting-age population turned out.

We need politicians who support voter involvement, not make it more difficult.
