Springtime in Maine is prime time for shed hunting.
Adam Heroux was out this past weekend with his two daughters, Fern and Olive, ages 5 and 3, on their Belfast property.
Fern found her first one.
“I finally found a deer antler,” she said.
She and her sister jumped around excitedly. Fern picked it up and showed off one side of what was an 8-point buck.
“I knew I was gonna find one,” she said.
As the snow melts and bare ground appears, it becomes easier to spot shed antlers from moose and deer. It’s also a great time because black flies aren’t out yet.
Heroux said they’ve been searching for antlers there for two years.
“It’s really amazing because we have found good ones, and I’ve thought about planting some, but this was all organic,” he said.
He also noted what he described as a monster buck they found sheds from two years ago right on his back lawn.
