Construction equipment has appeared at the former drive-in theater in Hermon, the site of a proposed $17.5 million Amazon warehouse.
An application filed with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for a construction permit at 1674 Hammond St. shows that construction was estimated to start on March 20, 2026, and be completed by March 1, 2027.
Hermon officials have not confirmed Amazon’s involvement in the development of the 60,000-square-foot warehouse, but a filing with the DEP shows that the online retailer is funding the project. The construction permit submitted to the DEP on March 19 does not mention Amazon.
Information on when the warehouse would open and how many jobs it would create have not been shared by the engineering company, town or Amazon.
Four Amazon facilities have either been announced, built or applied for within the last year in communities across Maine. Projects in Gorham, Waterville and Hermon are all for “last-mile” delivery services that Amazon has spent billions on in recent years.
The 12,000-square-foot facility in Caribou opened last year after months of planning that didn’t reveal Amazon as the backer for the project.
Gorham residents have spoken against a large 158,000-square-foot distribution center in town that may affect traffic, while a public hearing for a 159,000-square-foot distribution hub in Waterville is planned for next week.
An Amazon spokesperson did acknowledge the company is involved with the Hermon development, but did not provide any additional information.
“We’re always exploring the possibility of opening operations facilities in communities across the U.S. Nothing is finalized in Hermon, and we’ll share more if additional progress is made and we have something confirmed to announce,” an Amazon spokesperson said.
