The FBI has increased its reward for information about a Massachusetts man who disappeared in Portland nearly 20 years ago.

Miguel Oliveras, then 24, of Hyde Park, Massachusetts, was last seen alive about 1 a.m. on Sept. 2, 2006, at the Platinum Plus Club on Riverside Street, according to the FBI.

He was last seen wearing a gray camouflage long-sleeve shirt with a white T-shirt over it, green cargo shorts and white sneakers.

The FBI described Oliveras as a Hispanic man with black hair and brown eyes, about 5-foot-11 and weighing about 170 pounds at the time of his disappearance. He had tattoos on his neck, back, shoulder and hand.

He would be 45 today.

Since that day in 2006, there has been no sighting of Oliveras.

The Portland Police Department and FBI announced Thursday that the $10,000 reward, first offered a year ago, for information leading to finding Oliveras or his remains has been increased to $25,000.

“We are increasing our reward for information that leads us to Miguel Oliveras or helps us recover his remains. We’re talking about a son who never came home, and a mother who has been living every day in the painful space between hope and heartbreak,” Ted E. Docks, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, said in a statement. “Someone out there knows something, and even the smallest detail could make a difference. Miguel’s mom Myrna deserves answers, and she deserves the chance to lay her son to rest, to grieve, and to begin to heal. We’re urging anyone with information on Miguel’s whereabouts to contact us.”

Portland Police Chief Mark Dubois said his officers continue to “actively” search for Oliveras and are dedicated to holding those responsible accountable.

“It’ll be 20 years this year that my son disappeared and not knowing his whereabouts all these years is killing me,” Miguel’s mother, Myrna Oliveras, said Thursday. “I need anyone with information to please come forward. Please, I need my closure.”

Anyone with information about Miguel Oliveras’ whereabouts can call the Portland Police Department at 207-874-8584 or the FBI’s Boston office at 1-800-CALL-FBI. Tips can also be submitted online at tips.fbi.gov.
