BATH, Maine — Bath Iron Works offered a new deal to hundreds of striking workers Tuesday, despite saying their weekend offer was their “best and final.”
On Sunday, about 600 of the more than 6,000 workers at the shipyard walked off the job over issues like pay and health insurance premiums. Now, the shipyard is updating that offer, calling for a 10.5% wage increase in the first year, followed by 5% in each of the following three years.
The shipyard said it’s worth about a 28% wage bump over the life of the contract.
On Tuesday morning, Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner joined striking workers on the picket line.
“Being able to see workers come together, feel solidarity, seeing the other unions out here on the strike line, seeing community members coming out to support them, this is how working people demonstrate the power that they actually have, and for me, it’s a privilege to be out here to support it,” Platner said.
The Bath Marine Draftsmen’s Association couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
