A homicide investigation has been opened after a woman died at Central Maine Medical Center early Friday morning.
At around 1:26 a.m. Friday, a call to emergency services reported a shooting, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss. Lewiston police, along with Maine State Police, arrived at the residence and found that 22-year-old Maliyah Powell had been wounded.
The Lewiston woman was transported to Central Maine Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries, according to Moss. An autopsy conducted by the Maine medical examiner’s office showed that her death was caused by a gunshot wound, and has been ruled a homicide.
Elise Bergeron, 25, was arrested, and has been charged with murder. She was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail. Details of her arrest were not immediately available Friday evening.
An investigation is ongoing.
