Rasa Indian Cuisine will open on Sunday, March 29, after months of construction delays, bringing a new eatery to downtown Bangor’s restaurant scene.
“We’re excited to come into the Bangor location [and] introduce these nice Indian flavors to the local community,” said Sai Guntaka, who co-owns the restaurant with his uncle, Obul Reddy.
Guntaka owns Taj, a popular Indian restaurant in South Portland, and plans to open a breakfast cafe there next month.
Rasa will serve a lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 4 to 9 or 10 p.m. seven days a week, Guntaka said. The menu will include South Indian-style food like dosas, biryani and fresh naan made in a clay oven.
The restaurant will have a bar with cocktails and beer, including Sai Lager, which Oxbow Brewing makes for Taj. The beer will be available on draft and in cans.
The restaurant completely overhauled the space at 175 Exchange St., Guntaka said. The interior is designed by Ervin Architecture, a Maine company that also worked on the Maine Savings Amphitheater music venue, downtown Bangor’s Blaze restaurant and Kanu in Old Town.
“We were hoping to be open a few months ago,” Guntaka said, but the business has run into construction delays and is still finishing the ceiling design.
