One person died in a house fire early Thursday morning in Penobscot County.

The fire started around 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the small town of Winn, which is located north of Lincoln. One person died and multiple people were taken to the hospital, Office of the Maine State Fire Marshal spokesperson Shannon Moss said.

The house was at 1115 Route 168 in Winn near the town line with Lee, Moss said.

One occupant of the house had been reported missing, prompting the Lincoln Fire Department to ask for help from the fire marshal’s office. A woman was found dead in the residence that had burned.

The other occupants of the home suffered smoke inhalation and were transported to a local hospital in Lincoln for evaluation. It was not immediately clear how many other people were affected by the fire, but all residents have since been treated and released as of 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office.
