Portland police are investigating an early-morning apartment fire that they believe was intentionally set by a man who tried to escape out the window.
At about 2:43 a.m. Portland firefighters were called to Huston Commons at 72 Bishop St. for a fire alarm in a third-floor apartment.
Firefighters saw smoke coming from an apartment and found a small fire inside that they quickly extinguished.
During the investigation, Portland police found “suspicious materials” that their Hazardous Device Unit later determined were not a threat.
Police believe the occupant of the apartment set the fire inside then tried to lower himself out of the third floor window with sheets tied together, before falling to the ground.
He was taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to police.
Police have not yet placed charges.
