Colin Jost had the last laugh after his Saturday Night Live costar Michael Che insinuated that Scarlett Johansson wears the pants in the couple’s marriage.
“The winners of the annual wife-carrying contest in England was a couple from Finland,” Che, 42, set up a “Weekend Update” joke during the Saturday, March 14, episode of SNL. “While, once again, the winner of the husband-carrying contest was Scarlett.”
Jost, who has been married to 41-year-old Johansson since 2020, looked unamused by his coanchor’s diss.
“We both put food on the table,” Jost, 43, shot back. “They’re different kinds of food!”

The comedian and Johansson first crossed paths when the acclaimed actress hosted an episode of SNL. They started dating in 2017, tying the knot three years later.
Throughout Jost and Johansson’s marriage, their romance has consistently become fodder for various SNL punchlines and roasts.
“I now rarely watch [SNL] without having a sense of … not overwhelming panic, just like a slight underwhelming panic because I just feel like at any moment something’s going to fall apart,” Johansson said on The Kelly Clarkson Show in July 2021. “And that’s the excitement of SNL and for all audiences, right? Because it’s absolutely live.”
She continued at the time, “When you’re emotionally invested in it and not just entertained by it, it takes on a little bit of a different life.”
Despite her attempts to avoid the variety series, Johansson ended up watching the 2024 holiday show live after appearing elsewhere on the broadcast. The Eleanor the Great director, however, wasn’t pleased to hear Jost read a joke about her vagina during his annual “joke swap” with Che.
“Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu,” Jost read aloud on the December 2024 broadcast. “I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.”
Johansson, who gave birth to her and Jost’s son Cosmo in 2021, was visibly taken aback by the surprise line. (Johansson is also the mother of daughter Rose from a previous relationship.)

“I was, obviously, surprised by everything, but they gave her a heads-up,” Jost said on a January 2025 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “They were like, ‘Hey, would you be OK if Michael made a little, like, kind of vagina joke at some point?’”
Per Jost, his wife was “open to” being name-dropped on the show without knowing the full extent of the joke.
“I didn’t know where it was going and then the graphic came up for Arby’s,” Jost recalled. “Scarlett is backstage, like, ‘Oh, my God, that’s what it is?’”
Months later, Che issued a public apology to Johansson for writing the vulgar line in the first place.
Saturday Night Live airs on NBC Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET.
