Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. and meet with Sen. Susan Collins in her Washington office. As a CNA and nursing student from Maine, it was my first time meeting Collins in person, and I was grateful for the chance to share my perspective.
During our meeting, we spoke about the growing concerns around so-called “smart vapes” and nicotine pouches — products that are increasingly appealing to young people. In my work in healthcare, I see firsthand how nicotine addiction and tobacco use can impact lives. Naturally, I wanted to share why preventing addiction before it starts matters so much for our communities.
What stood out the most to me was that Collins took the time to listen. She asked thoughtful questions and genuinely wanted to hear our experiences from back home in Maine. I believe her care for the Maine youth is legitimate, and it showed in our conversation.
Regardless of the issue, it matters when our elected officials are willing to meet with constituents and hear directly from them. I’m thankful Collins made the time to listen and engage on an important issue affecting Maine families.
