The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for northern and central Aroostook County from early Wednesday into Thursday morning.

A storm approaching from the west is expected to bring snow, heavy sleet and ice that could create hazardous travel conditions from Mars Hill to Fort Kent, forecasters at the weather service in Caribou said.

The Presque Isle area is expected to receive 3 to 4 inches of snow, with 4 to 6 inches anticipated from Caribou to Van Buren and 6 to 8 inches possible in The County’s northernmost towns.

That will be accompanied by 1.5 to 2 inches of sleet across the region and ice accumulations up to around a quarter of an inch.

Precipitation from the storm will stretch as far south as Dover-Foxcroft and Calais, with southern Aroostook and areas of northern Somerset, Piscataquis and Penobscot counties seeing up to 3 inches of snow and sleet..

The weather service expects snow to begin around noon Wednesday, with sleet and freezing rain overnight into Thursday. The storm warning is in place until 8 a.m. Thursday.
