The upcoming season of Sullivan’s Crossing addresses Scott Patterson‘s absence amid a possible arrest, a divisive love triangle and more plot twists — and Us Weekly has the exclusive first look.

In the official season 4 trailer, Maggie (Morgan Kohan) finds herself torn between boyfriend Cal (Chad Michael Murray) and secret husband Liam (Marcus Rosner).

“Haven’t you ever made a mistake that you wanted to forget about?” Maggie asks Cal while calling Liam’s arrival in Sullivan’s Crossing a “surprise.”

Cal, however, is uneasy about Maggie never mentioning that she was “married before,” adding, “It’s not the only one full of surprises lately.” He explains that he’s surprised Maggie lied to him while suggesting “there’s more to this” than his girlfriend is “letting on.”

In response, Maggie clarifies that she “wasn’t trying to hide anything” from Cal. Despite her love for her boyfriend, Maggie appears to be drawn back to Liam as they address their past.

“I didn’t realize Maggie hadn’t told you about us,” Liam tells Cal, who fires back, “From what Maggie tells me, you won’t be around very long anyways.”

Liam tells Maggie that he wanted to pop in to check on her, which makes her realize “how much that breakup affected” her. Later in the sneak peek, Liam and Maggie both get emotional about what led to their split.

“I told you not to leave,” Maggie says through tears, as Liam replies, “If I just listened to you, we would still be together.”

While Maggie receives support from Sydney (Lindura Sappong), Edna (Andrea Menard) and Frank (Tom Jackson), her father, Sully (Patterson), is clearly missing from the trailer.

“Everything is going wrong since Sully left,” Maggie admits to her loved ones. She is also visibly shocked as someone is placed “under arrest for criminal negligence,” although it isn’t clear who is facing legal trouble.

Sullivan’s Crossing, which returns to The CW April 20, is based on a book series by Robyn Carr following neurosurgeon Maggie as she returns to her hometown in rural Nova Scotia.

Which ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ Stars Are — And Aren’t — Returning for Season 4?

Before the official trailer for season 4 was released, Us broke the news that Patterson, 67, wouldn’t be reprising his role as Maggie’s estranged father, Sully.

“Season 3 of Sullivan’s Crossing ended with Sully leaving for Ireland, beginning a new chapter in his life. Season 4 picks up the next day, with Sully still overseas,” Sullivan’s Crossing executive producer and showrunner Roma Roth exclusively told Us. “While he isn’t physically present in this season, the character remains an important part of the world with the potential to be included in future seasons should that align with the ongoing creative.”

Patterson, for his part, released a statement hinting that he was surprised by the decision. Season 3 previously showed Sully leaving for a getaway to Ireland with girlfriend Helen (Kate Vernon).

Sullivan’s Crossing is currently streaming on Netflix. Season 4 premieres on The CW April 20 at 8 p.m ET.
