Conan O’Brien made a rare comment acknowledging the “difficulties” he faced after his holiday party became connected to the deaths of Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer Reiner following a fight with son Nick Reiner.

“Very simply, we had a party, we invited our really good friends and then, the next day, this terrible thing happened,” O’Brien, 62, told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Monday, March 9.

O’Brien addressed the party often being mentioned in connection to the events that led to Nick, 32, being accused of murdering his parents, adding, “Whatever difficulties my wife and I have experienced having our name attached to it are nothing compared to the scale of the tragedy for the family and the loss of Rob and Michele.”

He continued: “If you’re a known person, your name is going to get dragged into things sometimes, but it is not a hardship. There is only sadness that they’re gone.”

O’Brien also addressed his decision not to mention Rob and Michele’s murders on his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast. He told the outlet on Monday that the idea of bringing it up on his own platform felt disrespectful.

Rob and Michele were previously found dead in their home in December 2025. Their son Nick was arrested later that night and held without bail. He has since been formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

After news broke of Rob and Michele’s deaths, there were reports that Rob and Nick got into a “very loud argument” at O’Brien’s Christmas party, and other attendees overheard the fight. A source confirmed to Us at the time that Rob and Michele attended O’Brien’s party with Nick the night before their bodies were discovered.

Nick allegedly acted “creepily” at the event before leaving, with an insider telling Us, “Nick was going up to people at Conan O’Brien’s party asking if they were famous.”

O’Brien originally broke his silence on the tragedy two months later.

“I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot,” O’Brien told David Remnick in an interview for The New Yorker, which was published in February. “My wife and I were seeing them a lot, and they were so — they were just such lovely people. And to have that experience of saying goodnight to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they’re gone.”

He continued: “I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward. I mean, there’s no other word for it. It’s just very — it’s so awful. It’s just so awful. And I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there — and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend.”

Which Celebrities Could Be Called as Witnesses in Nick Reiner Murder Case?

After Nick’s first court hearing, his siblings, Jake, 34, and Romy, 27, released a statement addressing their parents’ death.

“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” their January statement said. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends. We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life.”

The siblings then alluded to their brother’s criminal case, requesting that the public treat the situation with sensitivity, adding, “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”

Nick’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 29.
