Britney Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline faced his own legal troubles weeks before her DUI arrest.
Us Weekly can confirm that Federline, 47, is dealing with a lawsuit over unpaid credit card bills. Court documents obtained by Us claim that Bank of America sued Federline over more than $12,000 on February 19 in Hawaii. Federline has allegedly failed to make the payment. (TMZ was first to report the news on Friday, March 6.)
The account was opened in December 2024, which was one month after Spears, 44, stopped paying Federline $20,000 a month in child support for their two sons, according to TMZ.
Us Weekly has reached out to Federline for comment.
Spears and Federline were married from 2004 to 2007 and share sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19. Federline addressed the child support payments in his October 2025 memoir, You Thought You Knew.
“When Britney and I divorced, the court awarded me $20,000 a month in child support. At the same time, I was receiving alimony, another $20,000 a month, for half the duration of our marriage. A marriage that lasted two years and change,” he wrote at the time. “People hear figures like that and think you’re financially set. But the reality is far from that.”
He addressed rumors that he wrote the book because Spears’ child support payments ended in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Federline told the outlet that “money is not at the root of this story, [and] it never has been.”
News of Federline’s lawsuit came nearly 24 hours after Us Weekly confirmed that Spears had been arrested for driving under the influence on Wednesday, March 4.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Office records confirm that Spears was taken into police custody at 9:28 p.m. on Wednesday. Following a reported trip to the hospital to test her blood alcohol content, which was allegedly under the legal limit, she was booked at 3:02 a.m. on Thursday, March 5. Spears was released on Thursday at 6:07 a.m.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” a rep for Spears told Us in a statement on Thursday. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
The statement noted that her sons will be “spending time with her” in the wake of the arrest.
“Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue, needed plan to set her up for success for well-being,” the statement concluded.
Spears is set to appear in court on May 4.
