Tell Me Lies hasn’t had much success with fictional long-lasting love — but off screen the show has played matchmaker to several couples.
Based on Carola Lovering‘s novel of the same name, Tell Me Lies follows the messy relationship between college students Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White). Offscreen, Van Patten and White sparked romance rumors after season 1 premiered in 2022.
“All I’m saying is that I’m obsessed with her because she’s f***ing amazing,” White said on an episode of the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast at the time, noting that he hopes “that happens” between him and Patten. “Our lives are built in together. It’s crazy, we have so much to do together.”
White added: “She is the f***ing coolest, most grounded, amazing person IRL that you’ll ever meet. She was the fearless leader on our show. She’s 25 years old and runs a set like she’s been doing this for 30 years. She’s so consistent and good at this.”

Van Patten also spoke about the difference between their time on and off screen.
“I was super nervous because he knows me better than anyone and I know him pretty damn well,” Patten told Only Natural Diamonds in an August 2024 interview about working with her boyfriend. “My nervousness came from he’s going to know when I’m acting. He’s going to know when I’m being bad and he’s going to be like, ‘Nope, that’s not how you do it.’ But also, I have never felt so safe and comfortable, like being able to try things.”
She continued: “And we work so well together, and I love working with him not just because he’s my boyfriend but because he’s so talented and giving and present.
Branden Cook, meanwhile, got engaged to Katherine Hughes, who played his character Evan’s love interest Molly on the hit Hulu show. News broke in January 2026 that Spencer House and Sonia Mena found love off screen after playing onscreen couple Pippa and Wrigley.
“It doesn’t make any sense,” Mena exclusively told Us Weekly at the time about the show’s track record with successful matches off screen. “Because the relationships on screen are just terrifying. We are very different than the people we play.”
Mena and House credited casting director Lauren Grey for choosing the right people to pair off together. They emphasized, however, that they couldn’t be more separate from the characters they portray on the show.
“We are obviously very different. When you spend so much time with the people you work with — a spark happens,” House noted. “But there’s a line between us and work.”
