AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Republican Party office near the State House was targeted Thursday by a suspicious envelope that contained white powder.
The envelope arrived at the party headquarters around 1 p.m., according to a statement from the Augusta Police Department. The party’s office manager opened it and powder that resembled sugar spilled out, said Chair Jim Deyermond, who was in the building at the time and evacuated it before calling police.
The envelope had no return address and was double-stamped with stamps bearing characters from the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, according to photos shared by the party.
No injuries nor illnesses were reported, city police said. The Augusta Fire Department was nearly done clearing the building on Higgins Street by 1:45 p.m. but was waiting on a National Guard team of chemical experts to test the powder, Deyermond said.
“We’ve got to be careful,” he said. “Whoever mailed it is in trouble now.”
