Former NFL player Tre’ Johnson died unexpectedly at age 54.

Tre’s wife, Irene Johnson, took to Facebook on Sunday, February 15, to share the news of his death. “It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre’ Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, February 15, 2026, during a brief family trip. His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock,” she wrote alongside a number of photos of the late athlete.

Irene continued, “If you know Tre’ you know what a devoted and loving father he was to his children. Tre’ lived for his kids’ sports activities and supported them through every practice and game until he took his last breath. He shared his passion for Frenchie’s and riding his motorcycle with me and his fellow biking buddies.”

She also reflected on his NFL career, sharing that he was an offensive guard for eight seasons. First, Tre’ played for the Washington Redskins from 1994 to 2001, before being traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2001. He retired from the sport after the 2002 season. Tre’ was also named an All-Pro in 1999.

“He was a standout at Temple University. He was a 1994 second-round draft pick and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1999,” Irene wrote. “He was known for his durability and strength during his time in Washington. He loved the game and prided himself on his tremendous knowledge of it.” In addition to being an All-Pro, Tre’ was also a Pro Bowler. He played in 93 regular-season games and started 72 times, per NBC.

Irene went on to share that after Tre’ retired, he “found his second career” as a history teacher in Bethesda, Maryland. “He was beloved by the young male students he mentored and the faculty,” she gushed. “His recent battles with health issues forced him to take a leave of absence. We will miss him so much. 💔💔💔.”

Tre’s fans shared loving words in the comments section.

“I’m so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family,” one wrote. A second added, “Oh Irene, I’m so so sorry for your loss. Sending so much love to your family. We will keep you in our prayers as you navigate this difficult time.” A third commented, “Irene, I’m sending healing prayers up for you and your family! I’m so sorry to hear this news! He was A great player and a wonderful father.”
