A man allegedly used a hammer to destroy a granite pillar outside a downtown Bangor business.

Matthew Bowden, 46, has been charged with criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and violation of his conditions of release, according to Sgt. Jeremy Brock, a spokesperson for the Bangor Police Department.

Bowden was allegedly hitting a stone pillar outside the Main Street business about 4:13 a.m. Wednesday.

When police arrived, officers found a “large amount of granite had been removed” from the pillar and granite from the business’ door frame had been damaged as well, Brock said.

Bowden was taken to the Penobscot County Jail.
