For a third time in the past five months, failed Maine gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler has allegedly violated the probation conditions of his 2023 conviction for possession of child sex abuse materials.
The Maine State Police Special Victim’s Unit arrested Cutler, 79, in South Portland on Monday afternoon after encountering him at a hotel while conducting unrelated investigative activity, according to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss. During that interaction, police determined Cutler was in violation of the conditions of his probation, Moss said.
Police took Cutler into custody after consulting with his probation officer and transported him to Cumberland County Jail, where he is being held on a probation hold.
Last month, a judge imposed higher bail and more strict conditions on Cutler after he allegedly looked up pornographic materials on the internet on Dec. 28 and Jan. 2 from his home in Brooklin, according to court documents.
At the time, Justice Harold Stewart denied a request from Hancock County District Attorney Robert Granger to not grant bail, but told Cutler that he was “at the end of the runway” for being granted more bail if he again violated the conditions of his release.
Before that, Cutler was accused by his probation officer of violating his probation in September 2025 by visiting a website for a massage parlor in the San Francisco area and filling out a questionnaire about his preferences for a sexual escort.
