The Tigers of Shead High School in Eastport kicked off the high school basketball tournament in style, with the boys taking home a 50-38 win over Washburn District High School of Aroostook County.
The Tigers enjoyed a double-digit lead at halftime and held off a surge by the Beavers to deliver the first win, and first upset, of the tournament at the Cross Insurance Center.
Not only were the teams playing the inaugural game of the Bangor tournament this year, they were also playing the first game of the new Class S for small schools with student enrollment under 100. And the Tigers got a big lift from seniors Grayson Harkins, Jonathan Andrews and Isaiah Lawrence.
Harkins kicked the scoring off with a three-pointer, and had a game-high 21 points. Andrews, who recently hit his 1,000-point career mark, added 15. Lawrence was a force down low for the Tigers, leading the team with double-digit rebounds. Lawrence had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds
Senior guard Garrett Plourde led the scoring for Washburn with 15 points.
Shead came into the game as a slight underdog, at least in the rankings, as the No. 5 team in Class S North behind the No. 4 Washburn.
Washburn forced a turnover with 3:23 down 10. Silas Allen made in 9 point game with a little over two minutes left
Washburn ends the season 9-10. The Tigers are also now 9-10 after Tuesday’s win and are moving on to the next round of the tournament.
