The five North schoolgirl basketball tournaments are getting underway this week, and there are a number of players to keep an eye on.
Here is a list of players who have had outstanding seasons to lead their teams into their respective tournaments.
They are in alphabetical order:
Juliana Allen, Mt. Ararat, Class A
The 5-foot-11 forward was a Bangor Daily News All-Maine Schoolgirl second team selection last season and has led the defending state Class A champion Eagles to a 17-1 record and the top seed for this week’s Class A North Tournament. Allen had averaged 10.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots through late January and has anchored Mt. Ararat’s defense, which limited opponents to a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A North-low 27.2 points per game.
Mary Allen, Bangor Christian, Class D
The senior guard who transferred from Central High of Corinth with her younger sister Annie has led the Patriots to an 18-0 regular season, including three wins over reigning Class C state champ Penobscot Valley of Howland. Over Bangor Christian’s first 15 games, she led Penobscot Valley Conference Class D schools in scoring (22.9 points per game) and assists (5.7) and was third in steals (5.13).
Avery Clark, Bangor, Class A
The tireless and tenacious Ram standout guard and 2025 BDN All-Maine honorable mention has been a catalyst offensively and defensively. As of late January, she led the KVAC North’s Class A schools in scoring (14.7 ppg) and was second in steals (4.1), fifth in assists (3.2) and eighth in rebounds (7.3). She is a first-rate defender.
Addison Cyr, Mattanawcook Academy, Class C
The 6-foot-1 2025 BDN All-Maine second team pick has been the primary reason the Lynx will take an 18-0 record and top seed into the tournament. One of the state’s top post players, she has averaged more than 25 points, 17 rebounds and four assists per game, while also blocking three shots.
Grace LaBree, Hampden Academy, Class A
The 6-foot-4 LaBree has been a dominant presence in the paint for the 14-4 Broncos. She anchors the Broncos’s stingy defense, which has allowed only 35.2 points per game and controlled the boards. But late in the season she was averaging a KVAC A North-leading 2.2 blocked shots to go with 7.6 rebounds and 10.2 points.
Thea Laukka, Camden Hills, Class A
The 2025 BDN All-Mainer honorable mention has played a major role in the Windjammers’ 15-3 regular season. The Windjammers scored a lot of easy transition points off turnovers, and she was leading KVAC’s A North players in steals with 4.9 per game while also tying for second in assists (3.5). She was tied for seventh in points with 13.5 per contest through late January.
Ava Lerman, Wisdom, Class S
The talented multi-purpose guard powered the Pioneers to a 17-1 regular season campaign and the top seed for the tourney. She was averaging 23 points, five rebounds, four steals and four assists for the Pioneers earlier this season. She is also a team leader.
Rylee Moulton, Penobscot Valley, Class D
Moulton was the Most Valuable Player in the Class C North tourney a year ago, averaging 23.3 points per game and setting a tournament record for all north schoolgirl tournament classes with nine 3-pointers in a win over Calais. She is averaging more than 19 points per game this season, and the All-Maine honorable mention is also an exceptional defender, always among the team leaders in steals.
Maddie Provost, Lawrence, Class B
Provost was a first team BDN All-Maine schoolgirl pick a year ago, and she is having a terrific senior campaign averaging 28.1 points per game to lead the KVAC B/C players in scoring through late January. She also tied for the lead in made 3-pointers with 49 and was fourth in assists (3.4) and eighth in rebounds (7.5).
Molly Takatsu, Gardiner, Class B
The Tigers are 17-1 and the top seed for Class B North thanks to the versatile Takatsu. The gifted Takatsu was third among KVAC B/C players in assists (3.9), fourth in steals (3.9) and seventh in rebounds (7.8), while also producing 11.4 points per game through late January.
