WALLAGRASS, Maine — Two large barns in Wallagrass were lost to a fire that started Sunday night and went into Monday morning, according to the Fort Kent Fire Department.
The fire began at roughly 11 p.m. on Aroostook Road in Wallagrass.
About 30 firefighters were on the scene as the Fort Kent Fire Department received assistance from departments in Frenchville and Eagle Lake, Fort Kent Fire Chief Cole Pelletier said.
At first just one barn was ablaze, but the flames spread to a second barn nearby. The fire lasted roughly four hours.
Strong winds contributed to the spreading fire, Pelletier said. Firefighters also had to ensure that the flames did not spread to the barn owner’s home, which was just 40 feet away from the first barn that was engulfed.
Pelletier said he appreciated the assistance they received from other agencies, including Ambulance Service Inc., Fort Kent Public Works, the Maine Department of Transportation and Versant Power.
No injuries occurred during the fire.
A cause has not yet been determined. Pelletier said the state fire marshal’s office would arrive in Wallagrass on Monday to investigate.
