Jim Bowie, nicknamed the “River Monster” by fellow anglers, caught a giant pike Thursday at 12:30 p.m. on the Androscoggin River using a tip-up and a “top secret” bait.

The fish measured 41 inches and weighed 20.6 pounds before being released back into the river.

Bowie has volunteered with Operation ReBoot Outdoors for eight years, introducing hundreds of veterans and first responders to ice fishing.

According to the organization, his old-school approach resonates with everyone he works with, and his consistent, selfless dedication is unmatched. He also contributes year-round to other ReBoot projects.

A mechanic by trade and a longtime farmer, Bowie was one of the original five volunteers before Operation ReBoot became an official organization. Founder Dan Waite says his efforts, along with those of the entire volunteer team, have helped thousands of veterans connect with the outdoors.

Operation ReBoot offers free ice fishing trips for veterans and first responders, accommodating groups from one-on-one outings up to 14 participants. The organization has enough traps, tip-ups and other gear for 20 participants, and uses side-by-sides and snowmobiles to reach prime fishing spots whenever conditions allow.

Trips primarily target pike on the Androscoggin River, Sabattus Lake and the Belgrades Lakes region, but they also provide outings for various trout species.
