I am heartbroken and enraged at the violent actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) against immigrants and citizens in Maine, Minnesota and across the country. The killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and the fear federal agents have engendered among people of color, make me deeply sad and angry, but also determined.
I am encouraged by the work and support of so many to protect those who are vulnerable and scared — bringing food, standing guard, using whistles and cameras. People of compassion and courage are showing up. And with chants and songs and signs, calls to Congress, actions and prayers and donations, huge numbers of us are making our voices heard.
As a follower of Jesus, as a U.S. citizen, as a human being, I stand against the violent, hateful and threatening tactics of ICE and CBP in our communities. I stand with immigrants, tribal citizens, and all who feel afraid. I will continue to give, pray for all, love, and act for justice in this country.
