Hi, I’m Sabrina Martin, and I’m the new Ellsworth and Acadia National Park reporter for the Bangor Daily News.
It is a privilege to report on the people and places that define Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island. I’ll be covering the stories that matter to community members, from the latest restaurant opening on Main Street to the outcome of an evening City Council meeting. My goal is to serve my readers by chasing the news, adding context to the unfamiliar and asking questions so they don’t have to.
I come to the BDN from the Alexandria Times, just outside Washington D.C., where I wrote investigative pieces about local government issues. I covered safety violations at the parks department, the city’s property tax system and a federal murder indictment. I also freelanced with a legal magazine based out of Chicago, producing features focused on challenges law administrators face, like gender and racial disparities and the isolation of a remote workforce.
I grew up in a Maryland suburb of Washington and received my undergraduate degree at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism in Chicago, coupling my love for writing and reporting with a global health major. During my journalism residency at El Diario Perfil in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I covered Latin American politics on the international desk.
After college I spent two years as a homeless outreach worker on the West side of Chicago. I helped my clients access services like housing vouchers, mental health support and medical care.
I moved to Ellsworth, and Maine, to join the BDN and for my love of all things outdoors. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me somewhere in the woods or near the water.
