The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference at 2 p.m. on Thursday to provide an update on what is known about the presence and operations of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents throughout southern Maine.
The majority of the agents’ actions have occurred in communities with families of asylum seekers and immigrants, including the greater Lewiston-Auburn area. However, agents have not confined their actions to that specific area.
Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce announced Thursday that a Cumberland County Jail corrections recruit had been taken into ICE custody, and that county officials were working to get more details on the man’s detainment.
The presence of ICE agents has spurred both support and hostility across communities in Maine. Gov. Janet Mills in a Thursday morning press conference called for federal immigration authorities to “show the warrants” if they have come to Maine to arrest immigrants who may be here illegally.
