AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Janet Mills traveled to San Francisco on the first day of an immigration enforcement surge into Maine.

The Bangor Daily News obtained a photo of the Democratic governor and U.S. Senate candidate in the boarding area of a Tuesday flight from Boston Logan International Airport to the California city. Her campaign confirmed that she was traveling for a previously scheduled event, but it did not answer questions about what the event was.
The timing of the trip was notable, falling on the first day that President Donald Trump’s administration made the long-anticipated move to step up immigration enforcement in Maine. The federal government said 50 people were arrested among roughly 1,400 targets on the first day of what it is calling “Operation Catch of the Day.”
“Her administration remains in close contact with organizations across Maine to monitor ICE activity and ensure the safety and civil rights of people across Maine are protected,” Mills campaign spokesperson Tommy Garcia said.
Mills is managing state government while running in one of the most competitive Senate races on the 2026 map. She is in a primary with Sullivan oyster farmer Graham Platner for the right to face five-term Republican incumbent Susan Collins. Platner has been in Norway for much of this month with wife Amy Gertner, who is undergoing fertility treatment.
