Season 3 of Tell Me Lies surprised just about everyone with the shocking reveal that Bree and Wrigley had a romantic past.
During the Tuesday, January 20, episode of the hit Hulu series, Bree (Cat Missal) and Wrigley (Spencer House) grew closer in the past as the present timeline hinted at them being exes. On a hunch, Stephen (Jackson White) checked Wrigley’s phone at her wedding to Evan (Branden Cook) and realized Evan was the person who called Bree shortly before she got married.
“Honestly, I think [Bree and Wrigley’s] relationship offers the dynamic of the show a bit of relief. I think people were yearning for that and I think the writers were so smart in doing that,” Missal, 25, exclusively told Us Weekly about the romance reveal. “It’s a really beautiful thing.”
Missal teased how the fictional relationship will continue to get uncovered.

“For Bri, she’s just searching for security and searching for a truth that she’s not getting with most of these relationships in her life,” she noted. “And Wrigley opens that door a little bit for her.”
Some of the Tell Me Lies cast was caught off guard by the reveal.
“It was an adjustment — obviously — just in terms of where does that leave everything and how do we work through this triangle now,” Cook teased to Us. “How does that affect everybody’s relationship? That was fun.”

Cook joked that he wouldn’t be surprised if everyone ends up rooting for Bree and Wrigley, adding, “Nobody is rooting for Evan ever. But it was cool and it’s funny. Any time you add an element like that, it makes the job a lot more fun. The more drama, the better.”
House, for his part, “loved” adding a new component to his character’s backstory. “This was the most fun I’ve had in any season. It’s because Wrigley got to have an arc that had an upwards trajectory,” he shared with Us. “The first two were spirals, which was good in its own way.”
He continued: “But for me — as someone who’s shown up to work every day embodying that — it was nice to do an upwards trajectory. That was meaningful and nice.”
Based on Carola Lovering‘s novel of the same name, Tell Me Lies follows the messy relationship between college students Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen. Their problematic on-and-off romance ends up lasting eight years — and everyone around them is affected by their ups and downs.

The first season, which premiered in 2022, pulled quite a lot from Lovering’s book, but the ending flipped the script by extending the toxicity between Lucy and Stephen so the show could go on for more episodes.
House previously spoke to Us about his hopes for Wrigley after his brother’s shocking death.
“I really love Wrigley. I really love my role. I love the guy. And in the beginning, I remember [creator] Meaghan [Oppenheimer] and I talking because I don’t really think there was a clear direction on where Wrigley was going to go,” he said in October 2024. “I haven’t read the book and part of the reason I didn’t is because I hear that Wrigley is completely different and he’s barely in it.”
Taking a step back from the source material allowed House to develop his own take on Wrigley.
“We didn’t really know what direction they were going to go in. And it was always very important to me — because I love Wrigley — to bring that honesty that we talked about to the work,” the actor noted. “I am not a writer but there were moments where it’s like, ‘You could play this in a way where Wrigley is just a d***head or your average jock douche.’”
House, however, always knew there was more depth to Wrigley.
“I never wanted to play it that way. I talked to Meaghan — and, thankfully, she would agree — so I got very lucky with Meaghan as a boss in that kind of aspect. I never wanted that to be Wrigley,” he admitted. “I didn’t want him to be just, like, the jock douche stereotype that treats everyone poorly. I saw him originally as a good guy, and I’m glad that that’s kind of gone in that direction. He is not perfect, but I’m glad that it’s gone in that direction.”
New episodes of Tell Me Lies air Tuesdays on Hulu.
