Hilary Duff dropped her latest single, “Roommates,” after teasing it on social media earlier this month — and it’s even racier than those first snippets suggested.
The Younger alum, 38, released the full track and music video on Thursday, January 15, describing it in a press release as “a song about when life is life-ing, babe.”
She added, “It’s that ache for a wilder, freer time — before the days were swallowed by carpools, budget talks, grocery runs and letting old or new insecurities slip in. It’s the restless hum of wanting to find your way back — to your rhythm, to your person, to yourself.”
In “Roommates,” Duff details a relationship that started off spicy but is seemingly on its last legs.
“I only want the beginning, I don’t want the end,” she sings in the chorus. “I want the part where you say ‘goddamn’ / Back of the dive bar, giving you head / Then sneak home late, wake up your roommates.”
She adds, “Before we swept us under the bed and we became practically roommates / I’m touching myself at the front door / But you don’t even look my way no more.”
Later in the track, Duff escalates the line about self-pleasure, singing, “I’m touching myself, looking at porn / Because you don’t even look my way no more.”
Hilary Duff Reveals New Song Is About ‘Brief Experience’ With An Ex
Duff previously teased “Roommates” via Instagram on January 7 amid speculation that she was part of the “toxic” mom group Ashley Tisdale French wrote about in an essay for New York Magazine’s The Cut. While French’s rep denied that the piece was about Duff and fellow celeb moms including Meghan Trainor and Mandy Moore, Duff’s husband, Matthew Koma, raised eyebrows when he posted a parody of the article via Instagram.
“A mom group tell-all through a father’s eyes,” read Koma’s faux-post. “When you’re the most self obsessed tone deaf person on earth, other moms tend to shift focus to their actual toddlers.”
Koma, 38, and Duff tied the knot in 2019. The duo share daughters Banks, 7, Mae, 4, and Townes, 20 months. Duff also shares son Luca, 13, with ex-husband Mike Comrie.
Koma, who is also a musician, cowrote “Roommates” and previous single “Mature” with Duff. Her long-awaited new album, Luck … or Something is due out Friday, February 20.
Hilary Duff Opened Up About Ending Friendships Before Ashley Tisdale Drama
“I am often asked how I still have my head on straight after growing up in this industry,” Duff said in a November 2025 press release announcing the project. “The album title is my way of answering that question. It’s luck, but there’s also a lot of weight in the ‘ … or something.’ Many of the things I’ve been through along the way are held there, and I feel like ultimately that’s what’s shaped me.”
Luck … or Something marks Duff’s first album in more than a decade. Her most recent LP, Breathe In. Breathe Out., dropped in June 2015.
“I always knew I would be back at some point, but I didn’t have a running note on my phone until I started seriously talking with Matt about what new music might sound like,” the former Disney Channel star told Vogue last year while discussing her return to music. “To be 38 and have built a family that looks the way I always dreamed it would, I feel like I can step away and take some time to do this for myself. I’ve had a forward-facing life for such a long time, but I’m ready to connect with people again on a level that feels authentic to who I am now. It feels like a victory lap.”
