As Jews, we are only too aware of the antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism and many other forms of ugliness boiling up with increasing frequency in Maine and everywhere else. As members of Keshev (a group of area Jews committed to working for lasting justice and peace in Israel and Palestine), we are determined to practice here, where we live, the mutual care we want to see everywhere.

Part of our work is to prepare ourselves to stand up against expressions of hate when we witness them. We encourage our neighbors to seek out bystander training, whether as individuals or for our workplaces, faith communities, social clubs, or volunteer organizations. These sessions, available from organizations throughout the state, teach ways to defend others safely and effectively. Search online for one near you.

Every day we hear truly heartening stories of people protecting those who are targets of cruelty. Each of us can actively resist expressions of hatred. Each of us can actively make this the kind of safe and welcoming community we can be proud of.
